ENGINEERING is the combination of Science & Mathematics. Engineers figure out the things and find practical uses for scientific discoveries & inventions. Scientists and inventors often get the credit for innovations that advance the human condition, but it is engineers who are making those innovations available to the world. A good engineer is always a person who makes their own design that works with as few original ideas as possible.
The history of engineering is part and parcel of the history of human civilization. Engineering is, an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to motivate students to learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Engineers makes a huge role in the Information Technology means ITs from that a great revolution takes place.

What is B Tech (Bachelor of Technology)?
Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) is a professional undergraduate engineering degree programme awarded to candidates after completion of four years of study in the field. This undergraduate programme is your gateway to a career in engineering.
In India, a B.Tech degree is offered across various specialisations. Some of the more prominent ones are as follows:
Computer Science Engineering | Mechanical Engineering | Chemical Engineering |
Aerospace Engineering | Civil Engineering | Electrical Engineering |
Ceramic Engineering | Electronics & Communication Engineering | Instrumentation Engineering |
Metallurgical Engineering | Petroleum Engineering | Electronics & Electrical Engineering |
While all these specialisations offer bright prospects for students to get into different careers, computer science engineering is probably one of the most sought after nowadays. This is also reflected in the high cut off exam scores that top engineering colleges such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indraprastha Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) as well as some of the best central universities command from their respective applicants in order to enroll them for this programme.
In India, all technical programmes such as B.Tech, fall under the regulatory purview of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). Admissions to B.Tech programmes take place through national level/state-level/institute-level engineering entrance examinations. The top five engineering entrance exams taken by a large number of students each year are:
- JEE Main
- JEE Advanced
- VITEEE
- MHT CET
- TS EAMCET
The Bachelors in Engineering (BE) degree programme also offers a similar orientation to students as the one offered by a B.Tech programme. In fact, such is the degree of overlap in eligibility criteria to colleges, subjects taught, recruiting companies and even job profiles offered during placements, that often students wonder whether these are the same.
What is the difference between a BE and BTech degree?
The key difference between these two degree programmes is with respect to the course material taught and the orientation of the programme.
The following table captures the points of difference between these two programmes.
Difference between BE and B.Tech | |
---|---|
BE | B.Tech |
BE is more theoretical and knowledge oriented. It is study based on theory. | B.Tech is a skill/data oriented. The course is more of application engineering |
The course deals with engineering aspects of Science | The course deals with the technical aspects of Science |
The course is applied to develop innovative equipments and useful technical gadgets in Science and Technology | The course applies the principles of engineering and technology to modify structures and thereby enhance their quality. |
Both BE and B.Tech degrees offer students an opportunity to pursue a career in Engineering. The courses are of a duration of 4-years and are spread across 8 semesters.
There are typically two kinds of a engineering programme:
- 3-year BE/B.Tech after Diploma in Engineering
- 4-year BE/B.Tech after Class 12
4-year BE/B.Tech after Class 12
Required Skill set for BE/BTech
Ability to communicate – verbal and written | Familiarity with Industry Standards |
Knowledge of the core subject | Teamwork |
Creativity | Multi-disciplinary exposure |
Application of the knowledge | Leadership Skills |
Analytical & Creative thinking | Acquaintance with Computers & IT |
Eligibility Criteria for BE/BTech
The basic eligibility requirement for admissions to any BTech programme is:
- Candidates must have passed Class 10+2 exam from a recognised board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as core subjects.
- They must also have secured a minimum aggregate marks of 60% in the above subjects combined.
Please note that the BTech eligibility criteria would vary from institute to institute.
